I'm passionate about what I believe in, and the people I love. And I'm passionate about discovering what really matters in life. One of the things that matters most is desire. People are often afraid to desire, but that's like being afraid to grow, afraid to live.

Here's a poem about desire I want to share with you all. It was written by my teacher David Truman, who really understands and honors desire – and isn't afraid of it.

The Cause of Becoming

Desire is the quantity of the baby’s food.
Desire is the cause of the baby’s growth.
Desire is the motive force behind the baby’s cry.
All that is achievable is achieved
through pure and heartfelt desire.

The universe responds
not to demands, but to desire;
not to the crying, but to the yearning
burning behind the cries.
If the desire is not true and adequate
the response cannot be true and adequate.

Seek not to raise your voice;
raise your desire.
Allow desiring, needing, wanting
until crying is what it demands,
and its force exceeds inhibition.

In time sincere desire
overcomes all withholding.
The baby bird wanting the worm
is not self-conscious in its need.
The baby child wanting its food
has no reluctance to cry.
Eventually desire leads us
to retrace our steps
back to the land of innocence.

The cause of becoming is desire.
Be desire, and you are
the cause of becoming.
